Scottish Kilt

Sir Alexander Menzies made a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1665. The Menzies Tartan is featured in its delicate and understated beauty. The dominant shade in Menzies Tartan   is a strong black that is pierced through with creamy white horizontal squares formed at the intersections of light grey lines that run both horizontally and vertically. The black and white tartan is now known as the mourning tartan, although historically, it was worn by the Menzies clans of Durisdeer and Enouch, who lived in the Scottish Borders. The Menzies clan are said to have received a coat of arms in 1370-'a chief sable' - a black stripe across a white shield - that resulted in the black-and-white tartans' development. This tartan has a black background with seven white stripes in the same arrangement as the other tartans. Historically, a white shawl was worn by women to commemorate the passing of their husbands, so it is unclear how this became the mourning tartan - perhaps it was used as a shawl. ...
