Sir Alexander Menzies made a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1665. The Menzies Tartan is featured in its delicate and understated beauty. The dominant shade in Menzies Tartan is a strong black that is pierced through with creamy white horizontal squares formed at the intersections of light grey lines that run both horizontally and vertically. The black and white tartan is now known as the mourning tartan, although historically, it was worn by the Menzies clans of Durisdeer and Enouch, who lived in the Scottish Borders. The Menzies clan are said to have received a coat of arms in 1370-'a chief sable' - a black stripe across a white shield - that resulted in the black-and-white tartans' development. This tartan has a black background with seven white stripes in the same arrangement as the other tartans. Historically, a white shawl was worn by women to commemorate the passing of their husbands, so it is unclear how this became the mourning tartan - perhaps it was used as a shawl. The Menzies Clan is from Perthshire in Scotland. The ancestral seat of the Clan Menzies and the Menzies Baronets is Castle Menzies in Scotland. It is situated to the west of the little settlement of Weem, near Aberfeldy in the Perthshire Highlands, adjacent to the historic site of Weem Castle, which was demolished in 1502.
Clan Menzies was governed from the sixteenth century Z-plan castle for over 500 years. It was a key player in the turbulent history of the highlands due to its strategic placement. James Menzies commemorated his marriage to Barbara Stewart in 1571 by erecting a marriage stone at the entrance as the third Earl of Atholl and Elizabeth Berlay's daughter.
John Dow MacWilliam, alias MacGregor, broke into the castle in 1598 to rescue a thief named Donald Menzies from the dungeons. Because Alexander Menzies of Weem complained that John Murray of Tullibardine subsequently took Donald Menzies and MacGregor into his household as his servants and men after accepting them, Charles Stuart, the pretender to the throne, stayed at Weem for two nights on his way to the battle of Culloden in 1746.An entirely new wing was constructed in 1840, using the same Tay quarry stone material as William Burn, which was designed by William Burn.

Clan Menzies chiefs did not support the 1745 Jacobite uprising, but Jacobite leader Charles Edward Stewart stayed two nights in the castle. British-Hanoverian forces led by the Duke of Cumberland occupied the castle four days afterwards. Menzies of Culdares supported the Jacobite cause during the Jacobite uprising of 1715. He was captured and exiled to America, where he later returned to Scotland. He was unable to participate in the 1715 uprising, but he sent a fine horse to Prince Charles Edward Stuart. Menzies of Shian was killed along with his son during the campaign, and the Menzies lands of Glen Lyon provided refuge for refugees from the Battle of Culloden, including members of the prince's personal staff.
