  Clan Blair is an armigerous clan. This means that the clan's family name or even the names are registered in the Court of Lord Lyon and does not have a leader recognized as a member of the Lyon Court. The word "Blair " refers to the genitive of an ancient Gaelic phrase, "Blare '' meaning field or battlefield field. Blair is likely to be an ancestor of Norman origin or an area near Up hall, West Lothian. The document was signed in the presence of Stephen de Blare in 1204 for the monastery at Arboreta. Blair Castle served as the home for Blair Castle the seat of the Blair Clan for more than 800 years.
