Which Jackets to Wear with Kilts?
Kilt outfits are about as diverse as kilts themselves. There are many different ways to accessorize your Kilt Outfit, and there are just as many different Kilt Jackets that you can pair with those kilts as well. There are two ways you can break down the different styles when you are deciding which jacket you want to pair with which kilt, and that is by deciding whether you intend to wear the kilt outfit casually during the day or during dinners and other formal events as evening wear. A lot of these Kilt Jackets can be worn for both occasions, so it is wise to start by considering which design you are most fond of.
Prince Charlie Jacket:
The Prince Charlie jacket is an old-fashioned style and is the official base of Scottish formal clothing. The magnificent gown is steeped in history and is a symbolic hat for formal and evening events. This jacket is very embellished, with details embellished like silver colored buttons on the tails, sleeves and front, making it official. And it usually has satin lapels and silk epaulets. With a cut fit, this jacket is designed to allow you to show off your kilt and highland dress with pride.
Prince Charlie jackets are usually worn with a Casual Waistcoat with three matching buttons. The waistcoat features the same level of decoration as the jacket, with embellished buttons and satin lapels. He may also be wearing a waistcoat with five fasteners to complete the tie.
ARGYLE JACKETS:
Argyle Jacket look like a traditional dress suit. They are less formal than Prince Charlie but can be worn for formal and formal occasions alike. Think formal, but not very formal - ready to go to a wedding.
Argyll's traditional jacket is perfect for evening events. Our Essentials collection is made of new 150z Barathea wool.
Although less formal than Prince Charlie, Argyll's Jacket is still embellished with polished buttons on the flaps in the pocket and gauntlets (but not on the back of the coat). Laps and epaulettes are usually lightweight and are made of the same material as the jacket, although some manufacturers use a closed epaulette.
Pairing an Argyll Jacket with a vest is not necessary, but it is a matter of style and event. Normally, Argyll would be worn with a plain collar shirt and a regular neck tie.
For a more formal look, the Argyll coat can be worn with a waistcoat with five tight buttons. If you are going the formal route, we recommend pairing your Argyll jacket with a Victorian collar shirt and blue tie.
Argyll jackets can be worn with semi dress sporrans or sporrans for full-length formal activities or leather day sporrans for a casual look.
