My Scottish Sporran | Scottish Kilt

The sporran you choose usually depends on a number of factors: the style of clothing you wear, the event you attend, but especially your personal preferences. You may have a choice of sporans, so you are ready for all occasions, some for you.

Our Sporran guide provides guidance on how to use them.

WHICH SPORRAN IS GOOD FOR ME?

Scottish Kilt has chosen a collection of Kilt Sporrans that think of a modern man wearing a kilt.

Sporrans are used for storage (originally used by the Highlanders to store oatmeal) but they just don’t work. Ideal, formal or completely relaxed, a stylish sporran can be the highlight of your outfit and is an easy way to refresh any kilt.

The sporran you choose usually depends on a number of factors: the style of clothing you wear, the event you attend, and your personal preferences. You may have a selection of sporans to suit every occasion. Our practical guide is here to help you find your sporran and wear it the way you want.

FULL CLOTHING SPORANS:

Full-dress sporrans (or dress sporrans) are the most common type of sporran. It is perfect for formal events like weddings, is well-worn with a Prince Charlie dress.

It usually includes woolen edges, a woolen gusset, three to six embroidered woolen hooks with regular or reverse chains, and a metal candle at the top. The candle is usually made of pewter or silver and often incorporates Celtic knotwork designs. It may also show other Scottish signs such as full lion, Thistle, stag or saltire.Sprans in full cloth usually tie the back with a stud on a small flap that connects the front and back of the sporran. As they are the largest style of sporan, they allow the wearer to carry a range of items.

SEMI DRESS SPORANS:

Semi Dress Sporrans are a casual version of a full dress sporran. They are usually dressed in Braemar costumes on regular occasions as a graduation or as a guest at a wedding.

These sporrans are also made with a fur front, or not as high as those used for full dress sporrans. The semi dress sporran usually uses a hair spray.

They also include a leather gusset, three embroidered fur collars with regular or fall chains, and a leather flap on top. The flap usually incorporates Celtic or Scottish designs and may be embellished with pewter badges to enhance the design. Semi dress sporrans are usually tied with a stud under the flap. Expensive sporrans hide the stud under an extra piece of skin or cover it with a metal badge so that it is not visible from the front of the sporan.

DAY / LEATHER SPORRANS:

Leather Sporrans (or skin sporrans) are a very rare form of sporran. As the name suggests, they are perfect for a casual look.

Day sporrans usually follow the same design as a semi dress sporran but are made entirely of leather. They include a leather front, a leather gusset, three or more leather straps, and a leather flap. Both the front and the flap can be accentuated with Celtic or Scottish designs, and the challenges often have twisted leather straps to hold in place. Day sporrans are usually tied with a stud under the flap, hidden in the view of the most expensive sporrans. He may also tie by closing the hook.
