CLAN HISTORY OF MACMILLAN TARTAN
The Macmillans, like the Macphersons ("sons of parson") and the Macnab ("sons of abbot"), have church origins. In Gaelic, maol means bald or tonsured, so MacMhaollein "is the son of baldness or baldness". Ancient baldness was not uncommon, so raising a family with a common denominator would not be possible. However, ordination to the priesthood was relatively rare, so the origins of the church seem to be much better. So the name is old, as the one in question would have been a monk of the Columban church. This was named after St Columba, who founded it in Iona in the 6th century. The Columban Church preceded Roman Catholicism in Scotland, and recognized celibacy as a virtue among its priesthood. However, this was not emphasized, and many priests married. This tonsure was not what we know today, where the crown is cut, leaving the hairline. It involved shaving the hair in front of a line drawn from the skull from ear to ear. It was called St John's tonsure, and it was the subject of intense controversy between the Columban church and the Roman Catholic church in the 7th and 8th centuries. Roman practice eventually gained momentum. The first time we have a name that sounds like Macmillan is also a week. Inside The Book of Deer, written by Columban monks in the ninth century, is a list of local and family names. One of the names is Maolan. Deer was a monastery at Old Deer in Aberdeenshire, and it is thought that these were the lands from which the Macmillans first appeared. In some parts of Argyll the Macmillans were called Na Belaich, "Iron". The word “beld” means bald in Scots, and here again we find contact with tonsure. Some people say that the family is part of the Buchanan or Munros, or that they belong to Clan Chattan. Certainly there has always been a close relationship between the Macmillans and the Buchanan. We can hardly know for sure how the Macmillans, “bald sons or bald ones,” have been around for centuries. From where I can find MacMillan Tartan Fabric?
