The black and white tartan is now known as the mourning tartan, although historically, it was worn by the Menzies clans of Durisdeer and Enouch, who lived in the Scottish Borders. The Menzies clan are said to have received a coat of arms in 1370-'a chief sable' - a black stripe across a white shield - that resulted in the black-and-white tartans' development.
